Heel pain can be caused by a variety of different factors. As such, it is best to have a doctor or podiatrist diagnose heel pain to ensure that you use the proper treatment methods. Doctors will often use MRIs, X-rays, and bone scans to determine the exact cause of heel pain.
Dr. Lewandowski will use the latest technologies to get the root cause of your heel pain.
The most common symptoms of heel pain include pain in the bottom of the heel that is more pronounced when you wake up or stand up and pain that increases over a period of a few months. Obesity is a common cause of heel pain that can most easily be treated with healthy weight loss.
People with plantar fasciitis (pain in the band of tissue from the toes to the heel) have worse pain in the mornings but find that walking helps alleviate the pain. However, sometimes the pain gets worse the longer you are on your feet. Generally, plantar fasciitis occurs in people who have flat feet or high arches that put more pressure on the ligament between the heel and the toes. Other causes of plantar fasciitis include wearing non-supportive shoes on flat hard surfaces, which places excess strain on the foot.
We're proud to be the podiatrist clinic our community trusts. Are you suffering from the pain under the heel of the foot active people commonly experience? For more information or to get started with our services, contact Mid Nebraska Foot Clinic today. We look forward to helping you navigate the world less painfully.
There are several different treatments for heel pain. The first steps to help relieve heel pain are stretching exercises, placing ice packs on the heel to reduce inflammation, exercising the calf muscle, wearing supportive shoes, and taking anti-inflammatory drugs. If these don't help with the pain, then the next step is to use orthotic devices, supports, or straps to help support the foot correctly. In some cases, surgery may be required.
Other options include walking casts, night splints, and physical therapy. Surgery is often not needed unless none of the other treatments work. It is important to remember that when measures are taken to reduce heel pain, you must keep taking precautions to prevent symptoms from returning.

Sesamoids are bones that are embedded into a tendon. These bones are found in many joints throughout the body. In your foot, the sesamoids look like two little pea-shaped bones that are found within the ball of the foot on the underside of the big toe's joint. The purpose of the sesamoids is to act like a pulley for tendons, providing mobility and leverage to the toe while walking and running.
Your foot works to evenly distribute your weight, and the sesamoids help alleviate tension to the first metatarsal bone, which then absorbs any weight to the ball of the foot while running, walking, and jumping.
Sesamoid injuries often involve the tendons, bones, and surrounding joint tissues. Participating in activities that are physically demanding for your feet, such as running, football, basketball, golf, ballet, and tennis, can put increased pressure on your sesamoids. People with high foot arches and people who wear high heels are also at increased risk.
There are three main sesamoid foot injuries:
Turf toe
Turf toe is when the surrounding soft tissue of the big toe's joint is injured. This injury happens when the big toe's joint is extended beyond what is normal. A "pop" can be felt when the injury happens and generally causes immediate swelling and sharp pain.
Fracture
An acute fracture is the result of trauma or direct impact with the bone. Acute sesamoid fractures cause immediate swelling and pain but do not affect the whole joint. Chronic fractures are hairline breaks caused by stress or overuse. These fractures cause pain in the ball of the foot that comes and goes.
Sesamoiditis
Caused by overuse, sesamoiditis involves chronic inflammation within the sesamoid bones and tendons. Certain activities and shoes cause the pain to come and go. Symptoms of sesamoiditis include the following:
