Warts are one of the most common skin infections caused by viruses. Plantar warts (so called because of their location on the plantar, or undersurface of the foot) are found in areas of high pressure. These warts are small lesions under the foot that resemble a cauliflower with a little black spot in the middle.
Plantar warts can appear similar to corns or calluses but can be differentiated by observing the skin patterns. The lines of your feet, much like fingerprints but called skin striae, will conform to corns and calluses but will seemingly ignore plantar warts. The pressure you put on your feet by walking causes the warts to grow into deeper layers of tissue. It is very hard to determine when the virus was contracted due to the incubation period of 1-20 months.
It is estimated that up to 10% of the United States is infected by plantar warts. The virus is contracted from walking on moist surfaces such as swimming pools or showers. It is very contagious due to the ability to survive for months without a host.
Plantar warts are benign epithelial tumors caused by the HPV virus types 63, 1, 2, and 4. The virus is transmitted via direct contact and can enter through tiny cuts and abrasions in the skin. These warts can become very painful if left untreated.

I've never been to another foot doctor; I will remain completely devoted to this clinic. I enjoy the doctor and his staff. They're all wonderful to me, and they treat me with respect. God bless you, Dr Lewandowski. Now I can finally walk correctly and with no pain.

A callus is an area of the skin that is thickened by constant or continuous friction and irritation. They are generally not a painful or dangerous condition unless you suffer from diabetes.
Calluses are the body's defense mechanism to protect your skin when it is subjected to constant pressure and friction. In some cases, they can become excessive and painful if not looked after and treated.
There are a number of ways that calluses form. Walking around barefoot can develop calluses that protect the structural integrity of your feet. The uneven distribution of pressure by the toes, often seen in flat-footed patients, can cause callus formations on the underside of the toes. Some calluses can be caused by ill-fitting shoes or socks and can be exacerbated by working or exercising for long periods in shoes that aren't practical.
Calluses can be dangerous if you have diabetes due to preexisting circulation problems. The calluses can damage the surrounding tissues and break down already damaged capillaries. Blood pockets that occur beneath a callus that becomes exposed to the air can become susceptible to infection. If you believe that you fit into this category, contact your podiatrist at Mid Nebraska Foot Clinic immediately.
The best method is to prevent calluses from forming in the first place is by checking your feet for areas of wear and friction and adjusting your footwear accordingly. Removal methods include dissolving agents or sanding them down with a pumice callus remover. If you want to remove your calluses yourself, it can be a long and potentially painful process resulting in infection if not done properly.
The fastest, easiest, and least painful way to remove them is to schedule an appointment at Mid Nebraska Foot Clinic and have us remove them for you. Give us a call and let us help you today!
