Taking good care of your feet is important for your overall health and well-being. As podiatrists, we want to empower you with the knowledge and tools to properly care for your feet at home. Implementing just a few simple foot care tips into your daily routine can make a big difference, so let's dive into four below!
One of the best things you can do is examine your feet regularly; Harvard Health recommends at least once per week. Sit down and thoroughly look over each foot, including the tops, soles, sides, heels, and between the toes. Check for any changes in color or texture, thick or discolored nails, cracks, calluses, blisters, or irritations. Also, run your hand along each foot to feel for bumps, lumps, tender spots, or any abnormalities. If you notice any concerning changes, don’t hesitate to see a podiatrist. Catching and treating issues early is key!
Be sure to wash your feet daily using a mild soap and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as that can dry out skin. When washing, gently scrub to fully cleanse, especially between the toes where bacteria and fungi can hide. Thoroughly dry by blotting with a soft towel; don’t rub vigorously. Hydrate well with a moisturizer meant for feet. Apply all over the tops, soles, sides, and heels liberally. This helps prevent calluses and cracked skin. Our podiatrists recommend applying this cream nightly before bed!
Be kind to your feet by wearing supportive, well-fitting shoes with breathable materials. Have your gait analyzed by podiatrists to determine if custom orthotics are needed to reduce strain. Select cushioned insoles to help absorb shock, be careful while walking barefoot, and don’t ignore pain; stop any activity that causes foot discomfort.
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, 60% of Americans who have experienced heel pain in the last year also reported that they have trouble performing life's daily activities. Rest tired feet by elevating them periodically throughout the day. Caring for your feet properly promotes comfort, healthy mobility, and an active lifestyle.
Routine foot care is vital, and our podiatrists at Mid Nebraska Foot Clinic are here to help keep your feet healthy. We can assess, diagnose, and treat any issues early before they become problematic. Remember, healthy feet are happy feet! Call us today to schedule an appointment with one of our professionals.
